I don't know why the dogwood leaves seem to be changing early but I have noticed it too.
Flowering Dogwood Tree - leaves turning red and wilting [photos] I just planted a pink flowering dogwood tree a month ago, we used peat moss, top soil and the original soil around it to plant it. The tree was fine when we planted it but as time passed we noticed that some of the leaves were turning red and starting to wilt.
Aug 09, So, not a typical season. There is a dogwood tree in the front yard where I live whose leaves are beginning to turn red, here in early August.
I seem to remember dogwoods do turn early but wanted to check if this might be a sign of soil deficiency (which I suspect there is a lot of here, I've been working with the soil mainly in the back yard.). After the small red fruits ripen, the flowering dogwood's leaves begin to attain initial hints of pink, red and burgundy tones in October.
Leaves drop gradually across mid to late fall, hastened by freezes, continued windy conditions or heavy, stripping rains.

In general, leaves color early but persist on branches, not immediately dropping. Sep 21, Dogwoods are small trees that are popular additions to many landscapes in the eastern and southeastern United States. These beauties burst into pink or white bloom in spring and boast bright red berries in the fall. However, these trees are susceptible to many diseases and problems if not properly taken care of.

Dogwood Tree Care in the Fall and Winter.
Their oval to heart-shaped leaves deepen to crimson and orange in fall. The green leaves add charm and movement during the growing season and set a perfect backdrop for the bright flowerlike bracts. Leaf spots on flowering dogwoods are common and are usually only cosmetic. A common leaf spot is spot anthracnose with small reddish-purple spots along leaf veins and/or on flower petals (bracts), pictured on the left.
It is more prevalent in wet weather and usually only causes cosmetic damage.
